Battery Protection Plate
Impact protection plate: shock resistance meets thermal insulation
Autoneum’s new composite impact protection plate is engineered to meet the rigorous demands of electric vehicle (EV) battery protection. Utilizing long-fiber thermoplastic (LFT) technology, this lightweight component offers exceptional mechanical strength, thermal insulation and resistance to fire and corrosion. Its design ensures that the part maintains its structural integrity even after repeated exposure to road debris. Moreover, the material’s thermal insulating properties contribute to improved energy efficiency and an extended driving range.
The production process allows for waste-free manufacturing and offers flexibility in design, making it a sustainable and cost-effective solution for modern EVs. Validated through simulations and vehicle testing with various European OEMs, this innovation underscores Autoneum’s commitment to advancing e-mobility technologies.
Flame Shield
E-Fiber flame shields: innovative and mica-free flame protection for electric vehicles
Autoneum’s innovative mica-free flame shields redefine battery fire protection for electric vehicles, offering a high-performance, sustainable alternative to conventional mica-based solutions. Developed for applications inside the battery pack, these shields can withstand temperatures of up to 1400°C, hot particle impacts and intense gas pressure during thermal runaway events, which is critical for vehicle safety and occupant evacuation time.
In contrast to alternative standard products, which often consist of heavy and brittle mineral materials such as mica, the innovative E-Fiber-flame shields are lightweight, stiff and stable and offer optimum flame protection and fire blast resistance. Due to the moldability of the material, the shields also ensure excellent battery coverage and design flexibility. Additionally, a function to guide hot gases away from the battery can be integrated.
The composite shields are completely risk-free from a compliance perspective. This is in contrast to mica-based products, which can prove problematic in terms of responsible sourcing.
Autoneum’s flame shields have already been validated in full-scale battery tests by multiple OEMs and are currently in pre-development with various customers in Europe.
